A man named Dave Summers is one of those people who restore our faith in humanity. So, what makes him so special? One day, Dave noticed a woman sleeping on a lot across from his home in Los Angeles. Instead of getting angry and asking her to leave, he decided to build her a small cabin she could call home.
When the woman, Irene “Smokie” McGee, found out what Dave wanted to do for her, she couldn’t believe it. Using his woodworking skills and fascinated by the growing trend of people towards tiny houses, Dave went to the local hardware store and bought $500 worth of supplies before dedicating all his time and energy to building a small-scale residence for Irene. With the little cabin, Irene got a place to sleep, spend time, and store her meager possessions. The place is also safe and easily transportable.
Realizing how important it was for Irene to have her own home, Dave decided to share the video of his hard work on YouTube to raise awareness about homelessness in the country, which affects more people than we can imagine. Furthermore, Dave committed to helping even more people in the same situation as Irene. The mission grew and led to the fundraising initiative “Tiny House, Big Purpose”
Over time, Dave also dedicated himself to helping the less fortunate by offering educational opportunities or career options. When the local church learned about Dave’s noble mission, they generously offered space in their parking lot for these “Tiny Houses” to stay safe overnight. Additionally, the church also provides food, bathrooms, and clothing as part of its humanitarian goal to help the homeless start over and have a fresh start.
