When living in a hamlet or a small town, life takes on a picturesque and enchanting quality.
I mean the kind of place where practically everyone knows everyone else. Greetings by first name are considered standard, there’s a local bar where people gather, and there might be a few other buildings like a post office, a funeral home, and some kind of retail shop.
My point is that occasionally, it’s nice to convey to others the feeling of a closely-knit group. It’s certainly not for everyone, but it seems that quite a few of us prefer living in a community rather than being isolated in the wilderness.
That being said, I really wonder how many people can claim they’d rather live in a community where everyone has a home on the same street.
That’s certainly the case for the residents of a European community that gained some sad fame on Twitter earlier this month after an aerial image was shared online.
Amazingly, all 6,000 inhabitants of the southern Polish town of Suoszowa are situated along a single nine-kilometer-long street.
According to CSO Poland, the community, dubbed the ‘Little Tuscany’ because of its design, had a population of 5,819 in 2017.
It’s believed that each house on the street comes with a long strip of land that residents use for various purposes, including agriculture and animal housing.
Locals of Suoszowa responded to inquiries about the peculiar but undeniably impressive aerial images, describing life in their community.
‘I wouldn’t exchange this place for anything. It has its own charm and atmosphere. As the saying goes, it has something,’ said one resident.
‘The whole place looks the same: there’s a house and then a strip of field, hence the beauty of the photos. One has grain, the other rapeseed, and the third something else. The colors look beautiful from above.’
Reportedly, a second photo was shared on Reddit along with the question of whether the strips of land extending from the village belong to each house on the street.
Someone replied, ‘I just showed this to my Polish friend and he said yes!’
They continued, ‘Each house has that strip of land to do whatever they want, hence different colors, and they use the land for different purposes. Some grow crops, others have animals, some just leave it be.
‘I said I don’t believe him, but he says it’s true.’
What a remarkably strange arrangement. This village is unlike anything I’ve ever seen, I believe.
