Never Make These 9 Mistakes While Doing Laundry, as They Can Damage Your Clothes

  1. Appropriate Water Temperature: Clothes retain their color and elasticity longer when washed at the right temperature. Each garment has a small tag indicating the recommended washing temperature. However, it is recommended to wash heavily soiled clothes at a higher temperature to ensure proper cleaning.
  2. Very Dirty Clothes: It is highly recommended to hand wash and rinse very dirty clothes once to prevent dirt buildup inside the washing machine. Different stains may require different treatments, such as using lemon juice for sweat stains, a mixture of vinegar and liquid detergent for grass stains, and baking soda for red wine stains.
  3. Excessive Detergent or Fabric Softener: Putting too much detergent or cleaning product in the machine can result in improper distribution, leaving excess in the reservoir, causing deposits and unpleasant odors over time. Always follow the recommended dosage on the packaging.
  4. Water Softener Use: While a water softener makes fabric softer and eases ironing, it reduces the water repellency of special fabrics. It’s ideal for washing sportswear, towels, or microfiber clothing if not overused.
  5. Washing Undergarments: It’s better to hand wash and rinse most undergarments, as a long machine cycle may damage the material and quality. The same applies to swimwear. However, tights are suitable for machine washing with a gentle detergent, low speed, and low temperature, using a mesh laundry bag.
  6. Bleach Use: Bleach destroys fabric and weakens fibers. Chlorine bleach should never be used on elastane, lycra, or spandex. These should be washed only in cold water, without fabric softener, not tumble-dried, and never ironed.
  7. Washing Jeans: Jeans should not be washed too frequently to prevent quick deterioration and color loss. Manufacturers recommend waiting 2 to 4 months between washes, especially for darker jeans.
  8. Incorrect Drying: Incorrect drying can be as damaging as improper washing. Avoid using the dryer too often, as it makes ironing more difficult. For knitted and woolen items, dry them horizontally on a towel, avoiding hanging them down to prevent stretching.
  9. Keeping the Washing Machine Clean: After each wash, ventilate the machine, remove leftover detergent from the rubber seal, drain water, and wash the machine with vinegar once a month without clothes. Wipe the detergent drawer after each wash.
