Opinions are everywhere, but the wisdom of keeping some of them to yourself is sometimes overlooked.
A 76-year-old fashion influencer recently posted a photo showing herself posing in a sleeveless midi dress. Despite the influx of comments on the post, not all were positive.
“This hasn’t happened for the first time, but this one caught me off guard,” Candace Cima shared with TODAY. “There are persistent outdated beliefs about what is appropriate in fashion at a certain age, and this mentality needs to change. »
Cima, a grandmother of 11 grandchildren, flaunted a brown knitted sleeveless dress paired with a sweater.
On Facebook, one person criticized: “From the side and back, this dress does not flatter you. A tight fit below the waist is not your friend. Celebrate everything else about your body! »
Another commenter expressed: “With the sweater, not a fan of the dress. »
A different user boldly declared: “Not flattering at all.” Would never wear it alone. Too old to show that much skin. »
Cima responded: “It’s completely acceptable to have wrinkled skin at 76, and I’m not ashamed of it. Sometimes I want to answer, ‘Should I cover my face too, because I have wrinkles there?’ »
Cima launched her fashion blog in 2019, recognizing a gap for older women in the fashion space.
“I recognized an opportunity to discuss how to dress as we get older. Women have been imbued with the belief that they should cover themselves, following the examples of their mothers and grandmothers. »
“We need to change our perspective on aging. There is no need to conform to outdated notions in today’s modern world. »
Faced with many nasty comments, Cima chose not to pay much attention to them and instead gave advice to some of her new and young followers.
“Growing old is great. Everything you have learned your whole life is now available to you. You are now the wisest you will ever be. Embrace it and be proud. »
