You’ve probably seen those giant whales come out of the water’s surface and destroy a whole fleet of ships in fantasy movies. But I’m sure few of you have actually seen it, right? Well, there’s a reason they included it in the art. Because the way those huge fish come out of the water like little mountains appearing in the middle of the sea is really fascinating.
It’s both fascinating and terrifying when it appears right next to your boat. That’s exactly what happened to the fisherman in these photographs taken by photographer Douglas Craft. He was on a whale-watching boat in Monterey Bay, just off the coast of California, trying to snap some quality photos of the giant marine life. Clearly, he wasn’t planning on taking a photo like this.
When they saw movement on the surface of the water, Douglas went down on deck to shoot from a porthole near the waterline. That’s what gave these photographs this unique perspective of looking at the whale. He must be hoping to catch a glimpse of whatever it was coming out of the water.
He was stunned for a moment when he saw a giant humpback whale leaping out of the water like a giant rock. Thanks to his experience in the field, he quickly got over the shock and took what turned out to be a once-in-a-lifetime photograph.
Douglas also had the help of a whale watcher, Kate Cummings, who managed to capture a stunning video of the scene that you can see below.
