Expecting a child is an exciting and anticipatory period, and expecting twins can naturally be even more overwhelming. Matt and Jodi Parry experienced a double shock when they found out they were expecting twins, adding to their family that already included a son.
Unfortunately, their joy and anticipation turned into fear and anxiety when their doctor called, apologizing and informing them that their prematurely born twins, Abigail and Isobel, had been diagnosed with Down syndrome. Jodi recalls that the doctor described the diagnosis as “a lifelong punishment.”

At first, Jodi and Matt were filled with uncertainty, not knowing if their daughters would walk, talk, or even go to school. They received little assistance or guidance on how to care for their babies with Down syndrome.
Determined, the family sought information on their own and provided their daughters with all the love and support they needed.
Today, five years later, Abigail and Isobel have proven that the doctor and all the prejudices surrounding them were wrong.
Jodi reflects, “We wouldn’t change Abigail and Isobel for anything in the world now.”
Every individual, whether they have Down syndrome or not, deserves a chance in life, and Abigail and Isobel are perfect examples of that.
For too long, individuals with Down syndrome have felt invisible and forgotten because of their diagnosis. It’s essential to acknowledge that individuals with Down syndrome should have the same opportunities and freedoms as everyone else.
